About Brighton
Brighton grew from a sawmill on Ore Creek. Maynard Maltby of New York bought the first land in the village area in August 1832, he and his brother Almon started the mill the next year, and in 1838 the Post Office Department gave the settlement the name Brighton after Sarah Maltby's hometown. The village incorporated in 1867 and became a city in 1928. The mill pond behind Main Street survives as a park dedicated in 1972.
Jurisdiction takes some care here. The city is small and holds land that once belonged to Brighton, Green Oak and Genoa townships, while Brighton Township is a separate government, so a Brighton mailing address does not settle which rules apply to a property. I-96 and US-23 cross just outside the center, Grand River Avenue is the commercial spine, and Brighton Mall sits off the I-96 exit on the north side.
Medical use has a strong foothold along Grand River. Trinity Health moved its Livingston hospital operations from Howell to its Brighton campus there in April 2026. Retail and service businesses follow the same road, with Green Oak Village Place, a lifestyle center, to the east. Livingston County is one of the five markets we serve, and our stories from here include helping a Brighton storage facility owner decide whether to buy or build.
