About Chesterfield

Commerce here started with salt. French traders kept an early base known as La Saline near the Salt River, producing salt and brine to trade with Native Americans. Settlement followed the old Gratiot road: a hamlet stood at 22 Mile and Gratiot by 1835, and Milton grew up at 24 Mile near Gratiot, later served by a Grand Trunk stop. The township itself was carved from Macomb Township in 1842, and the arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1865 gave the Chesterfield settlement its best years. The Weller School survives at the township's Historical Village on Sugarbush Road.

Two different landscapes meet here. The southeast edge faces Anchor Bay on Lake St. Clair, where pleasure boats, docks and marine businesses line the shore and small communities such as Anchor Bay Shores and Lottivue sit off Jefferson Avenue. Inland, the township is mostly subdivisions and shopping developments.

There are no incorporated villages, so commercial activity collects on the main roads. Gratiot Avenue, or M-3, serves as the principal retail corridor. 23 Mile Road, also M-29, picks up heavy traffic at its I-94 interchange, and retail plazas and commercial sites cluster around that exit.
