About Clinton Township
The first settlement here predates the United States' hold on Michigan. In July 1782, David Zeisberger led a Moravian mission to a site on what was then called the Huron River, on land granted by the Chippewa, and named it New Gnadenhutten. They left in 1786, and Moravian Drive, the township's oldest road, keeps the name. The township began as Huron in 1818, and in 1824 both it and the river were renamed Clinton for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor. The Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal started out from the village of Frederick here, but it only reached Rochester and was abandoned by 1850.
Clinton Township wraps three sides of Mount Clemens, the county seat, which is a separate city. Gratiot Avenue, Groesbeck Highway and Hall Road are its main commercial roads. Groesbeck is known for industrial buildings, Hall for retail centers, and Gratiot for its long commercial strip.
The Mall at Partridge Creek, an open-air center, opened in 2007 near Macomb Community College's Center Campus at Garfield and Hall. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital sits on 19 Mile Road with a medical pavilion and cancer institute alongside it, forming a medical cluster of its own.
