About Coldwater

Coldwater owes its start to the overland road between Detroit and Chicago, which led to the town's platting in 1832. Joseph Hanchett and Allen Tibbits began the settlement and first called it Lyons, after Tibbits's hometown. It became a village in 1837, took the Branch County seat in 1842 and incorporated as a city in 1861. Sitting about halfway between the two big cities, it drew traveling performers, and Tibbits Opera House opened on South Hanchett Street in 1882.

Main Street is still lined with 19th-century buildings in the Coldwater Downtown Historic District, and the Marshall Street Historic District adds a second older area. The department stores that once anchored it, such as J.C. Penney, gave way to big-box stores near the highway. The State Public School on Marshall Road is now a state historic site.

Coldwater Township mostly surrounds the city, and the two are governed separately. That matters along I-69, which has three exits here and crosses US-12. Clemens Food Group's pork plant, opened in 2017 at I-69 and Jonesville Road, is in the township. Within the city, the Board of Public Utilities supplies public power, water and communications.
