About Dearborn

French-Canadian settlers called this area La Belle Fontaine, a name later anglicized to Springwells. Conrad Ten Eyck built a tavern in 1826 where the Chicago Road crossed the Rouge River, and in 1833 the federal government built the Detroit Arsenal on that road. The Arsenal closed in 1875, and the village that grew up around it took its name from Henry Dearborn.

Henry Ford made the city what it is. He built the River Rouge Complex here, along with his Fair Lane estate, and based Ford Motor Company's world headquarters in town. Dearborn and neighboring Fordson consolidated in 1928, partly to avoid absorption by Detroit, and the city kept two downtowns. East Downtown grew around Michigan Avenue and Schaefer Road, marked by the Art Deco Schaefer Building of 1930. West Downtown has its own development authority, and Michigan Avenue links the two.

Warren Avenue is a third business district and the commercial center of the Arab American community, which the Arab American National Museum has served since 2005. Fairlane Town Center opened in 1976. The University of Michigan-Dearborn and Henry Ford College share Evergreen Road, The Henry Ford draws visitors from across the region, and Cleveland-Cliffs Dearborn Works and AAA Michigan add to an employer base led by Ford.
