About Delhi Township

Mention Holt around Lansing and most people mean Delhi Township, but Holt is neither a city nor a village. It is an unincorporated community, and most of the township's residents live there. John Norris and Fred Luther arrived as the first permanent settlers in 1837, and the township was established in 1842. The settlement at its center was called Delhi Center, with a post office, hotel and tavern by 1857, until it was renamed in 1860 for Postmaster General Joseph Holt.

The township lies directly south of Lansing, with Jolly Road, Willoughby Road and I-96 along its northern edge, College Road to the east and Waverly Road to the west. The Grand River crosses the southwest part and Sycamore Creek the northeast. Michigan State University reaches into the township with its Horticulture Teaching and Research Center on College Road.

Cedar Street is the commercial main street, and the township's Downtown Development Authority has spent years buying and reshaping property along it to slow traffic and build a walkable center. Township offices sit nearby on Aurelius Road. Shopping centers, banks and restaurants line the corridor, and US-127 and I-96 keep the capital close. Delhi Commerce Drive, off Cedar, holds office buildings, and Delhi Technology Park on Holloway Drive offers high-bay warehouse space.
