About Livonia

A racetrack made Livonia a city. The township's boundaries were set by territorial act in 1835, and for about a century it was dairy farms, orchards and sheep. When the Michigan Racing Association built a thoroughbred and harness track in 1949, residents voted to incorporate so the whole township could share the revenue, and the City of Livonia took effect on May 23, 1950. The Detroit Race Course closed in 1998, but the boundaries it prompted remain, with the city covering the entire former township.

Industry arrived just before the track. General Motors built an automatic transmission plant in 1948, a Ford parts depot followed, and farmland gave way to commerce and industry. Ford's Livonia Transmission plant occupies 182 acres at 36200 Plymouth Road. I-96 crosses the city and I-275 runs along its west side, so these sites connect easily to the freeway system.

Commercial space divides fairly cleanly by corridor. Plants and industrial buildings gather along Plymouth Road, Trinity Health has its headquarters in Victor Corporate Park, and Laurel Park Place anchors shopping at Six Mile and Newburgh. Older retail sites have turned over, with Wonderland Mall and Livonia Mall both replaced by big-box centers. Schoolcraft College and Madonna University round out the institutions, and Greenmead Historical Village preserves a 103-acre farm at Eight Mile and Newburgh.
