About Northville

Water power fixed Northville's location. Settlers reached the Rouge River in 1825, John Miller's gristmill rose on the site of Mill Race Village, and the settlement became a village in 1867 and a city in 1955. Henry Ford bought a factory here in 1919 and later ran a valve plant that closed in 1981. The building was later converted to offices and a health club.

Two governments share the name. The city straddles Eight Mile Road, the Oakland and Wayne county line, while Northville Charter Township lies to its south entirely in Wayne County, with I-96 and I-275 passing through and M-14 just below it. Downtown centers on Main Street and Town Square. At Center Street and Seven Mile, the harness track that ran from 1944 to 2024 gave way to housing and a park along an uncovered stretch of the Rouge.

The larger business addresses are in the township, where Tenneco and the North American operations of ZF are based and a technology park sits at Five Mile and Beck. Township voters approved buying most of the former psychiatric hospital land on Seven Mile in 2009.
