About Plymouth
Plymouth has two old centers, and a railroad explains why. Luther Lincoln ran a sawmill along the Rouge after receiving land patents in 1825, and William and Keziah Starkweather built the first house nearby. Business gathered around the triangle now called Kellogg Park until the 1860s, when George Starkweather persuaded the Detroit and Howell Railroad to build through North Village. He cut a street through his own farm to link his store to the station. That district, along Liberty Street, is the Old Village.
The city's odd industrial claim is the BB gun. The Plymouth Iron Windmill Company began in 1882, its air rifle outsold its windmills, and the firm became Daisy Manufacturing in 1895 before leaving for Arkansas in 1958. Plymouth became a village in 1867 and a city in 1932, and its small downtown stays centered on the park, with Main Street and Ann Arbor Trail framing the blocks of shops and restaurants.
Larger commercial buildings are mostly in Plymouth Township, a separate government formed in 1827 that surrounds the city. I-96, I-275 and M-14 meet there, and Metro West, north of M-14 between Beck and Sheldon roads, is one of its main industrial and technology addresses. Automotive firms including Aisin World Corp. of America and Adient have been based in the township.
