About Pontiac

Pontiac began in 1818 where the Saginaw Trail met the Clinton River, on land held by the Pontiac Company, chaired by Solomon Sibley. It took its name from the Odawa leader, became a village in 1837 and a city in 1861, and serves as the Oakland County seat. Mills used the river first. Later, carriage makers such as O.J. Beaudette moved into auto bodies, and the city became an early center of the car business.

General Motors defined the following decades through Oakland Motor Car, Pontiac Motor, Fisher Body and truck and coach plants. Downtown sits inside the Woodward Loop, where M-1 circles the core. The Clinton River was enclosed in concrete there in 1963, and the 1970s Pontiac Plan added the Phoenix Center and office buildings.

An Amazon fulfillment center of about 823,000 square feet occupies the former Silverdome site, and United Wholesale Mortgage has its headquarters and campus on South Boulevard East. County government offices lie off Telegraph Road. The market mixes former industrial land, downtown office and older commercial buildings, with I-75 to the east.
