About Shelby Township
Michigan's territorial legislature set off Shelby in 1827, and its original land included what is now Sterling Heights. For a long time it stayed rural. Its small hub was Disco, platted in 1849 at what is now 24 Mile and Van Dyke, with a wooden bowl factory, a feed mill, a cider mill and a planing mill. Disco never incorporated, and only a few homes remain.
The site most people know came later. Packard Motor Car Company established its proving grounds on Van Dyke in 1927, hiring Albert Kahn to design the gates and lodge, and the company ran the track until 1956. Chrysler leased it during World War II, and Ford bought the property in 1961. A foundation now cares for the surviving historic buildings at the gateway.
Van Dyke remains the spine. The Downtown Development Authority covers the whole road within the township, from the Utica border up to 26 Mile, with office space along the way. Lakeside Boulevard and Hall Road form a retail district at the southern end, while the 26 Mile Road district leans toward retail, restaurants and medical services. Manufacturers look to Cherry Creek Corporate Park. Utica, on the southern edge, is a separate city.
