About Walled Lake
The name comes from what Walter Hewitt, the first American settler, found in 1825: a line of stones along the western shore that looked like a built wall, possibly the work of earlier Potawatomi residents. An Ojibwa and Potawatomi village stood here until about 1830. The Foster Farmhouse, an 1833 Underground Railroad stop, stood on Pontiac Trail until 1997, when it was moved to Riley Park downtown to save it.
For decades this was a resort destination. The Walled Lake Dance Casino opened in 1923, and an amusement park followed in 1929. The Casino burned on Christmas Day 1965, the park closed in 1968, and the land is now Pavilion Shore Park. Walled Lake incorporated as a city in 1954. The lake itself lies mostly in Novi, and the city sits north of Novi and east of Wixom.
Commercial activity is small in scale and concentrated on Maple Road and Pontiac Trail, where the two roads meet near downtown. A Downtown Development Authority, formed in 1990, supports the district. M-5 is minutes away, which connects local storefronts and service businesses to I-96 and I-696.
