About Auburn Hills
The name is younger than the place. The village of Auburn grew around a sawmill and gristmill in what was Pontiac Township from 1821, was renamed Amy in 1880, and became Auburn Heights in 1919. In 1983 the township and the village merged to form the City of Auburn Hills, and the old center at Auburn and Squirrel roads was later rebuilt as Downtown Auburn Hills.
Planning, more than history, built the commercial city. Oakland Technology Park was approved in 1985 and drew office and technology campuses, Chrysler among them. The company's headquarters and technology center became the city's corporate landmark, and Stellantis has its North American headquarters there. Great Lakes Crossing Outlets opened in 1998.
Automotive engineering is the local specialty. BorgWarner, PHINIA, Autoliv and Joyson Safety Systems are among the firms with facilities here. Education fills another part of the map, with Oakland University's main campus and an Oakland Community College campus on a former Nike missile base. The building stock leans toward corporate campuses, research buildings and flex space. Pontiac lies to the west and Rochester Hills to the east.
