About Brownstown
Local historians trace the name to Adam Brown, who was kidnapped by the Wyandot and rose to become a tribal leader. A Wyandot village stood on Brownstown Creek, and the area saw early fighting in the War of 1812, including the Battle of Brownstown on August 5, 1812, when Tecumseh's forces ambushed an American column. A corduroy stretch of Hull's Trace, the military road built that year, survives in the township. Brownstown became one of Wayne County's nine original townships in 1827.
On a map it is not a single block. When Flat Rock, Rockwood and Woodhaven incorporated, the township was left in three segments, so it is worth checking a map before assuming where a Brownstown address falls. The Huron River marks its southern line with Monroe County, and the southern end of the Detroit River lies within it, where Lake Erie Metropark on Jefferson Avenue draws fall hawk counters.
Commercial property follows the north-south routes. I-75 carries the big industrial parks, such as the Brownstown Business Center at Pennsylvania Road, and warehouse space is what the township is known for. Amazon opened a distribution center here in 2015. Telegraph Road is the other main commercial corridor.
