About Canton

Canton Township was carved from the southern part of Plymouth Township on March 7, 1834, and named for the city in China. Two small settlements came first. Sheldon's Corners formed after Timothy and Rachel Sheldon arrived from New York in the early 1820s, once the Chicago Road was surveyed, and the Ridge, later known as Cherry Hill, took shape to the west.

Dairy farming shaped much of the twentieth century here. The township has no incorporated city or village inside it, so its commercial geography follows the roads. Ford Road, M-153, crosses the middle as the main retail corridor, with the IKEA store at I-275. Michigan Avenue, the old Chicago Road and now US-12, runs through the south, where widening took much of Sheldon's Corners. I-275 forms the eastern edge.

The township's main corporate story began in 1984, when it sold land bounded by Haggerty and Warren roads to American Yazaki with a tax abatement. Yazaki North America has its headquarters in Canton. On the far west side, Cherry Hill Village, built around Cherry Hill and Ridge roads, gives the township a walkable neighborhood center of its own.
