About Commerce Township
Abram Walrod became Commerce Township's first settler in May 1824, and the township was organized in 1834. Commerce Village, platted in 1836, sits at Commerce and Sleeth roads and remains the historic center. The Huron River runs through the township from north to south, and lakes define the map: the incorporated village of Wolverine Lake lies inside the township, Union Lake is an unincorporated community in the northeast, and most of Proud Lake State Recreation Area is here.
The lakes also shaped the roads. M-5 ends in the township because a planned link to I-75 was canceled over construction difficulty around the water and high property values. Haggerty Road, Union Lake Road and Pontiac Trail carry much of the retail and service business instead.
The township has taken a direct role in development. In 2004 its Downtown Development Authority bought two golf courses and Huron-Clinton Metropolitan land, about 350 acres north of M-5 between Welch and Haggerty roads. Pontiac Trail was widened in 2007, and Martin Parkway followed in 2008 to extend the road network, with planned open space, trails and ponds. DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is the main medical anchor, and medical offices sit around it.
