About Farmington
Three Native American trails, the Orchard Lake, Grand River and Shiawassee, passed through the spot where Arthur Power, a Quaker from New York, founded a settlement in 1824. It was first called Quakertown and took the Farmington name in 1826 after his hometown. The village incorporated in 1867 and the city in 1926, and Farmington Hills later grew up around most of it.
Fred Warner ran cheese factories from Farmington and served as Michigan's governor from 1905 to 1911. His Italianate house at 33805 Grand River passed to the city as a museum in 1980. Much of the old town is protected: the Farmington Historic District joined the National Register in 1976.
Downtown runs along Grand River Avenue, with the Civic Theatre, the Farmington Pavilion and a run of older storefronts, and a renovation that began in 2009 rebuilt sidewalks, lighting and landscaping. Property here tends to be small: storefronts, restaurants and professional offices. M-5 and I-696 are minutes away. Sisters Michele and Marisa ran Focal Point Studio of Photography here for 44 years, a story we were proud to help tell, and our office is just up Grand River in Farmington Hills.
