About Genoa Township
Genoa Township was organized in 1837 from the north half of Putnam Township, two years after the first land entries were recorded. An 1880 county history described it as strictly a farming township, with many lakes and no streams of note. The small community of Chilson took shape in 1878 around a sawmill and a flour mill, near the corner of Chilson and Brighton Roads.
The township fills the space between Howell and Brighton, and it lies across a drainage line: the northwest part flows to the Shiawassee River and the southeast part to the Huron. Its commercial life is tied to Grand River Avenue and I-96, which run side by side through it. The I-96 interchange at Latson Road ties Latson to Nixon Road across the freeway, and township planning sets aside the land between I-96 and Grand River for regional commercial use, with interchange commercial just to the south.
Cleary University has its Livingston campus here, and the Mount Brighton ski area is in the southeast part of the township. Property along Grand River runs to showrooms, restaurants, retail plazas and small offices. Many of these buildings carry Howell or Brighton mailing addresses, so it pays to confirm which municipality controls the zoning.
