About Grand Blanc

French traders who came through before 1800 called this place great white, though accounts differ on what was white. The Chippewa were here first, and pioneer families took up farmland by 1823. In 1833 Grand Blanc Township became Genesee County's first unit of government. Saginaw Road was laid out along an improved Indian trail in 1829, and the railroad arrived in the 1860s, shifting growth to the township center.

There are two governments under one name. A four-square-mile core incorporated as the City of Grand Blanc in 1930, and the township surrounds it on all sides. Voters turned down consolidation in 2006, so it matters which side of the line a property sits on. Saginaw Street is the old spine of both, and Holly Road and I-75 carry the newer commercial activity.

Health care and finance anchor the office market. Henry Ford Genesys Hospital sits on Genesys Parkway, and McLaren Health Care has a corporate office here. Security, ELGA and Dort Federal credit unions all keep their headquarters in Grand Blanc. Dort Highway carries industrial buildings on the east side. Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, longtime home of the Buick Open, is in the township.
