About Green Oak

The territorial legislature erected Green Oak Township on March 17, 1835, and its original land also took in what later became Brighton Township. Its most prominent early resident was Kinsley S. Bingham, elected governor of Michigan in 1854 and again in 1856. Much of the township grew around its lakes and small settlements, including Rushton on Nichwagh Lake, Island Lake and the Green Oak community on the east side. Part of Whitmore Lake falls within it as well.

Large-scale retail arrived at the US-23 exit for Lee Road in the northwest part of the township. Costco and Kohl's built there in 2004, and Green Oak Village Place opened in stages from 2006 to 2008 as a cross between a power center and a lifestyle center. Roundabouts were added at the interchange to handle the traffic. The center uses a Brighton mailing address, though it is in Green Oak Township.

M-36, also known as Nine Mile Road, is the other main commercial road, and it meets US-23 at a second interchange. Light industrial and flex buildings sit near the freeway, including along Green Oak Industrial Drive, and CSX tracks cross the east side of the township.
