About Hartland

Settlers reached Hartland in 1831, and the township was established in 1836 with boundaries that have stayed put ever since. Two early villages took hold: Parshallville in the northwest corner and Hartland Centre near the middle, now simply Hartland. Brothers Robert and Chauncy Crouse ran a general store there, and a descendant, J. Robert Crouse, later founded the Hartland Area Project, which shaped the village's civic life. The township remained mostly farmland until the mid-1960s.

Two commercial areas came out of that history, and they feel quite different. The older one is the village itself, an unincorporated community tucked away from the main roads, with older buildings holding local businesses along with the Music Hall and the Cromaine Library. The newer one is the crossing of US-23 and M-59, which the township treats as its central business district. Restaurants, retailers and professional service firms gather there.

US-23 runs through as a freeway, with exits at M-59 and Clyde Road, and Old US-23 parallels it. M-59 heads east toward Oakland County, which borders the township. Property here is mostly small-scale retail and office around the interchange, with land parcels along M-59 and Old US-23.
