About Highland
Highland Township was organized by the territorial legislature on March 17, 1835, and named for its elevation. Rufus Tenny, who arrived in 1832, became its first supervisor. Farming and a cider, vinegar and pickle trade carried the early economy, and the railroad brought a stop at Highland Station.
No incorporated village exists here. The township is a set of six unincorporated communities: Clyde, East Highland, Hickory Ridge, Highland, Seven Harbors and West Highland. M-59, called Highland Road, is the commercial line across the township, and its construction drove both residential and business building. Duck Lake Road meets it at East Highland, Livingston Road runs through the Highland community, and Milford Road runs north and south past the headquarters of Huron Valley Schools.
Land ownership sets real limits on development. Nearly a quarter of the township belongs to the state as Highland Recreation Area. Part of that land was Haven Hill, the estate Edsel and Eleanor Ford began assembling in 1923 in Highland and White Lake townships and which later passed to the state. In 2006 Highland became Michigan's first designated equestrian community. Commercial space is largely neighborhood retail and service buildings along M-59.
