About Howell

John D. Crane and Edward Brooks laid out a village in July 1835 at the center of a county still being organized, and it was first called Livingston Centre. It took the name Howell after Thomas Howell, a friend of Crane's. Brighton held on to county government for about twelve years, but the first courthouse went up in Howell in 1847. Its replacement, finished in 1889 at 200 East Grand River, is the landmark of the town.

Grand River Avenue has carried the city's commerce since the 1830s. Fires in 1887 and 1892 took some of the early buildings, and the blocks rebuilt around the courthouse square were listed on the National Register as the Howell Downtown Historic District in 1987, with much of the building stock dating to the 1870s. The Carnegie District Library and Cleary University are also in the city. Howell Township, formed in 1836, wraps around most of the city and has its own government, along with Spencer Hardy Airport and a mix of industrial and commercial land.

Manufacturing is the heavy presence. Thai Summit America runs a plant of about 1.2 million square feet off I-96 that dates to 1985. Our work here has included the Howell Health Hub medical office and a blog post about a Howell landmark given a second life.
