About Huron Township
Huron Township is a remainder of something much bigger. Organized in 1827, it first took in the land that became Romulus, Belleville, Van Buren Township and Sumpter Township, and those pieces split away between 1835 and 1840. A settlement platted on the Huron River in the 1830s got a post office called Catville in 1860 and was New Boston by 1868. Willow began as Belden, platted in 1857, and Joseph Waltz platted Waltz in 1872. All three remain communities within the township.
The river still sets the character of the place, with Lower Huron, Willow and Oakwoods Metroparks following it through the township. Business activity leans on I-275, which has three interchanges here. Township planning has pointed retail and service uses toward the Sibley Road interchange, with commercial and industrial development on land beyond the main roads.
Brose, the German automotive supplier, took over the former Chrysler Mopar site on Bell Road in New Boston for mechatronic parts used in vehicle bodies and interiors. A major reuse project is the former Pinnacle Race Course land, bordered by Pennsylvania, Wayne, Sibley and Vining Roads, which Wayne County sold for development as Pinnacle Aeropark. With the airport close by, large industrial and distribution buildings define the township's commercial property.
