About Lyon Township

Lyon Township began with an inn. Russell Alvord and Daniel Richards, both from New York, acquired land in 1830 at what became New Hudson and opened a tavern the next year as a stagecoach stop. That building survives as the New Hudson Inn. Alvord platted the community in 1837, three years after the township was established. Kensington, once a village here, is gone, and its name lives on in Kensington Metropark.

New Hudson is still the commercial center, though it is unincorporated. Grand River Avenue, Pontiac Trail and South Milford Road meet there, just south of the I-96 interchange. South Lyon sits beside the township as a separate city with its own government, so addresses need checking. The township plans its industrial and research corridor around I-96 and Grand River, and buildings such as the Lyon Business Center at South Hill Road follow that pattern.

Specialized manufacturers give the area its character. Pratt Miller, known for running the Corvette Racing program, is based in New Hudson, and Testek and Bielomatik also work from the township. Lyon Oaks County Park, opened in 2002, sets aside about 1,041 acres, most of it wetland. We have spent real time here, and our Lyon Oaks success story with Eric Szerlag is on our YouTube channel.
