About Madison Heights
Madison Heights was part of Royal Oak Township until residents voted it into cityhood on January 17, 1955. Its first city hall stood on John R Road, and the municipal building on West Thirteen Mile was dedicated in 1963. Freeways and a county line frame it: I-75 on the west side, I-696 along the south, and Dequindre Road on the east, which doubles as the Oakland and Macomb boundary.
Most of the tax base comes from light industrial and commercial property, and the city's own planning documents map it clearly. Retail gathers on 12 Mile and 14 Mile roads and along John R between them, with big-box stores and supermarkets. The main industrial areas are on Stephenson Highway and in the northeast corner between Whitcomb and 14 Mile. An older, smaller industrial strip runs along 10 Mile.
The Downtown Development Authority district sits along John R and 11 Mile, an area with a legacy of small light industrial, warehouse and auto-related buildings. Vietnamese and other Asian-owned businesses are a distinct part of the local economy, anchored by 168 Asian Mart. For tenants who need smaller industrial space close to both freeways, that is the stock the city is known for.
