About Milford

Milford started with a sawmill built by Elizur and Stanley Ruggles in 1832, followed by a gristmill in 1834. Mill ponds went in on the Huron River in 1836 and 1845, and the village incorporated in 1869. Water power stayed central for a long time: the village had electric lights in 1892, and a dam formed Hubbell Pond in 1911. By 1939 Henry Ford had added a carburetor plant and two hydroelectric stations, part of his plan to let residents farm and work in factories. The plant came down in 2002, and his Art Deco power station on Pettibone Creek remains.

Precision matters with the name. The Village of Milford is a home rule village inside Milford Township, and the township handles its assessing, tax collection and elections. Downtown runs along Main Street, with I-96 to the south and Kensington Metropark nearby.

The defining employer is General Motors. Its Milford Proving Ground opened on September 25, 1924, as a dedicated vehicle testing site on about 1,125 acres and has since grown to about 4,000. Downtown business is smaller in scale, with shops, restaurants and professional offices.
