About Pittsfield Township

This land was organized in 1834 as the Township of Pitt, named for British prime minister William Pitt at the suggestion of settler Ezra Carpenter, and it took the longer name Pittsfield in 1839. It had been part of Ann Arbor Township before that. Early crossroads settlements such as Lucerne, Mallett's Creek and Nebraska have since faded, and the settlement of Pittsfield is remembered for the McCracken School, the county's first, built in 1825. The township received its charter in 1972.

Pittsfield is separate from Ann Arbor, though the two are easy to confuse. Many township properties use Ann Arbor mailing addresses, including the Costco off State Road. Ann Arbor Municipal Airport works the other way: it belongs to the city but sits inside the township as an exclave, near State and Ellsworth Roads. I-94 crosses the north end, US-23 the east side, and Michigan Avenue, or US-12, cuts diagonally across the southern half.

State Road holds the office and flex market, including Avis Farms Business Park just south of I-94. Thomson Reuters has its tax and accounting operations in the township, near Textile Road. Retail gathers along Ann Arbor-Saline Road, where Oak Valley Centre sits, and on Carpenter Road and Washtenaw Avenue on the northeast side.
