About Romulus

Romulus began as a farm township, split from Huron Township by the territorial legislature in 1835, with an early settlement at Pullen's Corners that later became known as Five Points. Its direction changed in 1929, when ground was broken for the Wayne County Airport at Middlebelt and Wick Roads. The field opened in 1930, passed to the Army as Romulus Army Air Field in 1940, and took the name Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in 1958. Romulus itself did not incorporate as a city until 1970.

Most of the commercial market here relates to the airfield in some way. I-94 and I-275 both cross the city, rail reaches it, and the airport handles cargo as well as passengers, so warehouse and distribution buildings are the signature property type. The Wayne County Airport Authority is based at the airport. General Motors has its Romulus plant on Ecorse Road, which opened in 1976 under the Detroit Diesel Allison Division and has built engines and transmissions.

Industrial parks sit close by, including Ecorse Commons next to the GM plant, and more logistics buildings line Wayne Road south of the airport. Romulus also keeps an older core. Its original central business district, overseen by a Downtown Development Authority since 1981, lies along Goddard Road near Wayne Road, where City Hall stands.
