About Saginaw Township

Saginaw Township once covered far more ground than it does now. Organized in 1831 as part of Oakland County, it took in today's Saginaw County along with parts of Bay, Genesee and Midland Counties. New counties and townships trimmed it over the years, and when the City of Saginaw incorporated in 1857, the land west of the Saginaw River was taken from it. The city adjoins the township to the southeast, and the two remain separate governments.

Bay Road, which carries M-84 north toward Bay City, is the township's retail road. Fashion Square Mall opened on it on October 4, 1972, with JCPenney and Sears as the first anchors, at the corner of Tittabawassee Road on the north edge of the township. Smaller plazas such as Bay Plaza line the road across from the mall, and I-675 is close by.

State Street, a state highway running 3.5 miles through the township, is the other main commercial corridor, and property value gains from its business district have paid for improvements along it. The Tittabawassee River runs along the township, and a large township soccer complex hosts regional tournaments. Retail and professional office buildings make up most of the commercial property along these roads.
