About South Lyon
South Lyon was settled in 1832 as Thompson's Corners, inside a township named for Lucius Lyon. It became a village in 1873 and a city in 1930. Railroads made it. Three lines once ran through town, and when the Grand Trunk's Jackson Branch crossed the Pere Marquette here in 1883, the place became a rail junction.
The Witch's Hat Depot is the surviving piece of that era. Built in 1909 with its conical roof to serve both lines, it closed in 1955 and was moved from East Lake Street to McHattie Park in 1976 as a bicentennial project. The Grand Trunk branch ran until the early 1980s and is now a paved rail trail that links McHattie and Volunteer parks, with Reynold Sweet Parkway following the old route. The CSX main line between Detroit and Grand Rapids still crosses town.
Local industry grew out of that same rail access. William McMunn founded Michigan Seamless Tube in South Lyon in 1927, drawing tube from used boiler stock, and McMunn Street carries his name. Business space is small in scale: storefronts along Lafayette Street downtown, shops on Pontiac Trail, and older industrial sites on the west side of town. I-96 lies a short drive north.
