About Southfield

Southfield was first organized in 1830 as Ossewa Township, a name that lasted 17 days. The replacement referred to its position in the south fields of Bloomfield Township. Lathrup Village and Beverly Hills split away in the 1950s, and what remained voted to become a city on April 28, 1958, partly as a defense against annexation by Detroit.

Two projects made it a commercial destination. Northland Center, developed by J.L. Hudson with architect Victor Gruen, opened in March 1954 as one of the country's first regional shopping centers and ran until 2015. In the 1970s Prudential backed the gold-glass towers of what is now Southfield Town Center, starting with 3000 Town Center in 1975, just off the Lodge Freeway and across from Lawrence Technological University.

Freeways keep the office market here. The Lodge, I-696, the Southfield Freeway and Telegraph Road all pass through, and several meet at the interchange called the Mixing Bowl. Lear and Denso are among the companies with major offices in the city, and Henry Ford Providence Southfield occupies a hospital campus on Nine Mile.
