About Sterling Heights
The Heights in the name came from a practical problem: Michigan already had a village called Sterling. The land began as Jefferson Township in 1835 and became Sterling Township three years later. Into the 1950s it was farm country, known for rhubarb and other crops sold in Detroit, with produce moving on Utica Road, a planked toll road, and along the Clinton River. In 1968, after turning down several annexation bids from neighbors, voters made the whole township a city.
Industry came along Van Dyke. Chrysler's Missile Division opened a plant there in 1953, Volkswagen bought it in 1980 without ever building a car in it, and Chrysler took it back in 1983 for vehicle assembly. It is now a Stellantis plant building Ram pickups, with a stamping plant nearby. Ford makes axles and transmissions here, and General Dynamics Land Systems and BAE Systems give the city a defense presence tied to TACOM next door in Warren.
Van Dyke and the M-53 freeway run north through the middle of the city, Mound Road parallels them, and Dequindre marks the Troy line. Hall Road is the retail edge, lined with shopping centers, and factories and manufacturing buildings fill the north-south roads.
