About Taylor
Taylor Township was created in 1847 from part of Ecorse Township and named for Zachary Taylor. The first landowner, Peter Coan, bought in 1830, and Coan Lake in Heritage Park carries his name. Voters approved cityhood in 1966, and the charter passed in 1968.
The commercial map is a simple cross. Telegraph Road, US-24, is the main north and south route, and Eureka Road is the main east and west route and the shopping district. Southland Center opened in 1970 at Eureka and Pardee and anchors the regional retail along that stretch. I-94 runs across the north end of the city, and I-75 clips the southeast corner. Goddard, Northline, Allen and Pelham roads fill in the rest of the grid.
Industrial buildings appear along Inkster Road, Beech Daly Road and the Telegraph corridor. Hungry Howie's Pizza also started in Taylor. Wayne County Community College's Downriver campus and a Corewell Health hospital serve the city, and Heritage Park hosts the Junior League World Series.
