Commercial Real Estate in Tecumseh, Michigan

About Tecumseh

On May 21, 1824, settlers from Jefferson County, New York, made the first Anglo-American settlement in Lenawee County here. Musgrove Evans found the land and persuaded General Joseph W. Brown to come, and the two of them, with Austin Wing, platted a village named for the Shawnee leader Tecumseh. It held the county seat until 1838, when the courts moved to Adrian. That same year it annexed neighboring Brownville. Brown also ran a stage line from Detroit to Chicago through town.

For much of the 20th century the town was known for one company. Tecumseh Products, led by the Herrick family, made refrigeration compressors on East Patterson Street, and the town took the nickname Refrigeration Capital of the World.

Chicago Boulevard, which is also M-50, is the downtown main street, with historic storefronts holding shops, restaurants and small businesses. Manufacturing continues on the same road, where Kirchhoff Automotive builds structural parts at its plant on East Chicago. Tecumseh Township surrounds the city on three sides, but the two are independent.
