About Troy

Big Beaver Road takes its name from a pioneer village settled in 1825 where the Paint Creek Trail, later Rochester Road, met an east-west two-track. The other early center, Troy Corners, grew up after Johnson Niles bought 160 acres around 1821. Troy Township dates to 1827, and residents incorporated as a city in 1955, partly to stop neighbors from annexing its land.

Open fields along Big Beaver became a corporate address once I-75 put freeway ramps at its door. Saks Fifth Avenue opened in 1967 and Somerset Mall grew around it by 1969. Kresge, the company behind Kmart, moved its headquarters to 3100 West Big Beaver in 1972, and the 25-story Top of Troy was finished in 1975. Somerset North followed in 1996, joined to the original mall by a 700-foot skywalk over the road.

City planning treats Big Beaver, Maple and Rochester as its main corridors, and that sorts the property fairly well: high-rise office on Big Beaver, with retail and smaller business space on the others. Walsh College teaches business here, and companies such as Kelly Services, Altair and Magna Powertrain have made Troy a base.
