About Venice Township

Zachariah Webb, remembered as the township's first pioneer, arrived in 1836 and left two years later. Joel B. Goss and Hiram Johnson followed in 1837, and Elnathan Brown came in 1839 and built a hotel and overnight stop near a grist mill. Neighbors held the first township meeting on April 1, 1843, at the home of Neely Sawtell.

Lennon is the township's only village, and it sits on the county line, with its western side in Venice Township and its eastern side in Clayton Township, Genesee County. Peter Lennon, its founder, secured a Grand Trunk Western Railroad route and depot and put up a grain elevator, and other businesses followed.

Beyond the village the township is mostly farmland, with Misteguay Creek crossing its northeast corner. Three highways pass through: I-69, M-13 and M-21. M-21 runs directly between Owosso and Flint, which puts the township a short drive from both.

Venice is best understood as part of the wider Shiawassee County market, which sits along I-69 about halfway between Lansing and Flint. Owosso, the county seat to the west, is the county's business center, with manufacturing and Memorial Healthcare among its major employers. Durand, just south of the township, grew up around the Grand Trunk rail junction. Property in Venice itself runs to small businesses around Lennon, farmland and rural acreage along the highways.
