About Warren

Warren started as a roadside stop. Beebe's Corners, at Mound and Chicago Roads, took its name from John L. Beebe, who kept the toll gate on the plank road to Detroit, and travelers paused there on the way to Utica. Warren Township was organized in 1837, the village incorporated in 1893, and in 1957 the village and most of the township became a single city.

Defense and automaking turned that farmland into an industrial city. Chrysler built a truck plant in 1938, and in 1940 the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant followed, an Albert Kahn design owned by the government and run by Chrysler. Tank production ended in 1996, but the Detroit Arsenal remains an active Army installation and home to TACOM. General Motors added its Technical Center, designed by Eero Saarinen and dedicated in 1956. It is a National Historic Landmark.

Eight Mile Road forms the border with Detroit, I-696 crosses east to west, Van Dyke runs up the center, and Groesbeck Highway cuts diagonally through the southeast. Stellantis has its truck assembly plant on Mound Road, and Macomb Community College's South Campus is here too. The city is almost fully developed, so commercial property mostly means existing industrial, retail and office buildings.
