About Wixom
Wixom started in 1831 as Sibley's Corners, named for settler Alonzo Sibley. Willard Clark Wixom granted a railroad right of way and platted land in 1871, and when the spot became a rail junction in 1883 it took his name. Ford's plan for an assembly plant prompted incorporation as a village in 1957, and city status followed in 1958.
That plant defined the place for fifty years. Wixom Assembly opened in April 1957 on South Wixom Road, replacing Lincoln's West Warren Avenue factory in Detroit, and grew to about 4.7 million square feet on 317 acres. It built Lincolns and Thunderbirds along with the GT40 and the later Ford GT, and the final car, a Town Car, came off the line in 2007. Demolition began in 2012, and the land has since been reworked for light industrial use, with General RV and a Menards on nearby acreage.
Commercial property here is mostly industrial and flex space tied to I-96, with parks reached by Wixom Road, Beck Road and West Road. Trijicon, the maker of aiming optics, is based on Shafer Avenue, and Discraft and Rockwell Medical have also operated in the city. Pontiac Trail holds the city offices and the Wixom Village Center downtown development.
